Overview: Human impact leading to ecosystem destruction necessitates the development of restoration strategies. Looking at the great number of various parameters determining a plant community, the inclusion of soil microorganisms in restoration practices is indispensable. Future research on symbiosis is desperately needed for enlightening the AMF biology & PGPRs and elucidating the precise relationship between plant species and their soil environment for successful re-establishment of plant species in a new environment or in a destroyed ecosystem under restoration.
This three day workshop will not only provide the forum to discuss the biology of microorganisms and its role in the ecological sustenance but will also help in determining an effective strategy for restoration of destroyed ecosystem and re-establishment of plant species, thereby minimizing the global warming impact. The workshop will host the leading scientists and their view for the use of microbes in restoration of ecosystem.

Host Department:
The Department of Biochemistry was started in 1994. In a short span of time the Department has made rapid strides in teaching and research. Now the Department offers 2 year M.Sc. Biochemistry, M.Sc. Biotechnology programs and a 5 year integrated M.Sc. Biotechnology program. In addition to this it offers M.Phil and Ph.D. programs. The major areas of research in the Department include free radicals and antioxidant defence systems, analysis of medicinal utilities of natural products for the treatment of diabetes, heart disease, hepatotoxicity, cancer and for radioprotection.

Workshop Background:
Cell culture has become one of the major tools used in life sciences today. Cell cultures provide a good model system for studying 1) basic cell biology and biochemistry, 2) the interactions between disease-causing agents and cells, 3) the effects of drugs on cells and 4) the process and trigger for aging. Liver and kidney-derived cell lines are widely used alone or in conjunction with animal tests to study the effects of new drugs, cosmetics and chemicals on survival and growth in a wide variety of cell types. Since both normal cells and cancer cells can be grown in culture, the basic differences between them can be closely studied. In addition, it is possible, by the use of chemicals, viruses and radiation, to convert normal cultured cells to cancer causing \cells.

Workshop Programme:
The workshop will be conducted for 20 participants. This Cell Culture workshop will cover lectures and hands-on experience on

* Basics in animal cell cultivation
Media preparation
Sub-culturing
Assessing viability of cultured cells
Suspension and adherent culture
Cryopreservation and thawing
Dealing with contamination

* Testing cytotoxicity of anticancer agents/phytochemicals by
MTT assay
Clonogenic cell survival assay

* Assessment of genotoxicity of anticancer agents/phytochemicals by
Alkaline single cell gel electrophoresis & Analyzing comet length by CASP software
Cytokinesis blocked micronuclei assay

* Estimation of intracellular ROS by DCFH-DA fluorescence staining
* Measurement of mitochondrial membrane potential by Rh-123
* Analysis of apoptotic morphological changes by ethidium bromide/acridine orange staining in cultured cells

UGC Biological Sciences Summer Workshop 2010 for Researchers/Teachers, Indian Institute Of Science (IIS), Banglore.

Applications are invited for the first summer workshop in Biological Sciences to be held in March-April 2010. Duration 3 weeks. The workshop will cover theory classes and exposure to basic experiments in modern biology. The exact dates will be notified in due course.

Applications from teachers and researchers from university and affiliated institutions are invited to the First Summer-2010 Workshop in Biological Sciences being held during April 1-21, 2010 at Indian Institute of Science. The workshop consists of theory classes in basic and contemporary topics in various disciplines in biological sciences and hands-on training on recombinant and general laboratory techniques. Applicants should send a brief biodata including a paragraph on current research being carried out and list of publications if any to the coordinator of the UGC Networking Centre. Since the number of seats is limited, preference will be given to those who are engaged in teaching and research. Boarding and lodging will be arranged at the Institute, and travel expenses by train, according to the Institute guidelines, will be reimbursed by the UGC-NRC.
