Job Description
This research assistant position will support and lead field and lab activities relating to trait integration of Pioneer maize germplasm. The work will include moderately complex activities utilizing good laboratory practices while assisting with research experiments.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Leads and assists with shipping and receiving of seed shipments to the nurseries, parent seed locations and other research centers, ensuring shipping compliance of materials. Acknowledge receipt of seed shipments to research center. Completes required forms and documentation for successful transfer of information and seed.
Assists with creation and organization of database to support decision making process and disseminate information to regional centers.
Support general research center operations including, but not limited to, field mapping, seed filling, packet sorting, planting activities, pollination, harvest, seed requests, and supply orders.
Lead maintenance of seed inventory including accurate recording, removal of discard seed and efficient storage of active germplasm.
Use unique skills and procedures, ensures that all material necessary for conducting field experiments are prepared properly and on time. Staying current on experiment protocols and changing technologies are essential to accomplishing assigned tasks.
Assist in design of data collection strategies and process plans. Implement data collection for trait integration increase and observation experiments. Lead crews of 2-20 temporary employees in activities including seed preparation, field note collection and summarization and support, and lead crews in leaf punching and germplasm screening/scoring.
Organize and schedule work effectively as a team member with many other staff members at a multi-project research center to ensure that company goals and deadlines are met.
Accountability for overseeing and/or directing the work of others ensuring that priorities are set and that work is performed safely, accurately and efficiently. Generally part-time employees on short-term basis.
Support safety program implementation and may train seasonal employees on safety. Clearly communicate the importance of completing tasks in a safe manner.
Educational Qualifications Desired High school diploma and 2 to 4 years of related experience required, or equivalent amounts of relevant education and experience.
Competencies and Experience
Desired Computer data entry and competency with Microsoft Office programs, especially MS Access and Excel and capable of learning new software are required.
Ability to work well with others and function effectively and professionally in a team environment.
Must be detail oriented, self-motivated, and have a positive attitude.
Ability to work extended hours including weekends will be required during seasonal busy seasons.
May be required to do physical labor and work in field, lab and seed handling areas with varying ergonomic environments.
